This award is targeted towards recognizing individuals for accomplishments in design and solving of real world problems with the use of 3D Printing. America Makes is a national institute dedicated to the advancement of America through the use of Additive Manufacturing and 3D Printing.The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) , is the nation’s largest laboratory dedicated to using the sciences to tackle America’s energy needs. The purpose of the award is to inspire young people and increase their interest in the sciences, manufacturing, and other areas that improve society as a whole. The award can be attained by anyone participating in the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC). The FRC accommodates students from the 9th through the 12th grade.
To be considered for the award, participants are required to submit a proposal for their idea as well as the actual 3D Printed Model/part. Parts submissions are judged primarily on innovation, good 3D Printing design practices, knowledge of the techniques and methods used in order to design the model, being able to recognize the mentoring tips provided by the FIRST coaches, as well as community outreach and marketing.
