What Are 3D Printing Filaments?

3D Printing Filaments are the materials you use in your 3D printer to create your projects. 3D Printing filaments work the same way ink works in your home printer.  3D printers that will give you the best value will be able to use multiple types of filaments and have a quality support base from the manufacturer and the user community.  Most 3D printers use filaments that are a universal fit, the two common sizes are 1.75mm and 3.0mm. The 3.0mm filament size is older but is being quickly replaced by the 1.75mm size as it is easier for your Printer to push the smaller filament through the Print nozzle called the Extruder. The competition keeps quality up and prices down for the universal filaments. Beware of 3D printers in which you can only use the manufacturers filaments! The two main types of filaments are ABS and PLA 3D printing filament. Even though both can be used interchangeably with most projects they each have specific benefits and drawbacks. We recommend that you only buy your filaments from your Printers manufacturer or from reputable dealers such as this one.
Please check our “Printer Filaments” section for information on the various filaments as new types are released relatively often.

Happy Printing!
